What do you do in 1-2 sentences?

I help coordinate people’s financial affairs by designing and implementing strategies to help individuals and businesses navigate their financial life. This may include helping a retiree ensure they won’t outlive their income, protecting love ones in the event of a loss, helping a business sustain through generations, or helping a couple maximize their legacy to their heirs and charities they leave behind. When not with a client, I’m working with the team to further the daily progress of our group.

The best part about my job is…

People - meeting new people, working with my team, and building a great business.

When I’m out of the office I enjoy…

Time with my wife, Andrea, and family; traveling; and experiences—anything from a new place to eat or to experience a new culture. I also enjoy skiing, and occasionally dabble in golf and hiking. Spending time on our family farm where I grew up has become something I enjoy more and more as time goes on.

Your life story condensed into one paragraph?

I grew up on a wheat farm in eastern Washington and graduated from a small town high school of about 300 kids, where I explored a passion for music, I was the drummer for the Jazz band. I also had the privilege of knowing my later-to-be wife as a friend throughout high school, before going off to college at Washington State University. There, I earned a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in economics. A curiosity for seeing the world led me to many parts of the globe, and later led me to join nonprofit efforts in Africa and Southeast Asia. My desire to bring together financial strategy work and consulting with people planted the seed to launch my financial advising work in Bellevue, and over a decade later here I am.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

Figure out your priorities. Then plan your life around that, and don’t allow society’s influence to cause you to stray from these priorities.

The best part about my job is…

The people I work with every day.

When I’m out of the office I enjoy…

Hiking in the Cascades whenever I can. At home, cooking has become one of my favorite pastimes. Of most importance, is spending time with my wife Ashley and my daughter Dylan.

Your life story condensed into one paragraph?

I grew up in a traditional family, working for my father’s construction company. I excelled in school, and in my early 20’s delayed my college pursuits while I worked in the restaurant industry. I enjoyed this time of my life, and eventually found it was time to move on and follow my interests in Finance. After finishing college, I stumbled upon Grant, and have been here ever since. I strive to keep life simple, I have a beautiful wife and daughter and I love what I do.

Something you don’t know about me is…

If it weren’t for the bad commute, I would love to live in the woods or on a farm so I could enjoy a little piece of solitude each day.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Travel more when you are young.
Read books early on.
Listen to your grandparent’s wisdom.

Zach Hamilton

Financial Advisor Partner

What do you do in 1-2 sentences?

I help people make sense of their financial lives; making uncoordinated and seemingly complex matters simple and easy to understand. I specialize in financial planning work with clients in the tech and professional services sector, as well as strategies for the charitably inclined.

The best part about my job is…

That “Ah-Hah” Moment clients get when they see the improvements we helped them make; I love being a part of that.

When I’m out of the office I enjoy…

Snowboarding in winter, BBQ’s in the summer. Time with my wife is key, and when time allows a good thriller book is a great pastime for me. Mentoring and serving youth at Younglife.

Your life story condensed into one paragraph?

I was born and raised near Tacoma. My dad was working with investments, my grandfather worked with insurance—and they didn’t speak the same language. I believed there was value in a career that spoke both languages and so I pursued comprehensive financial advising. I completed a finance marketing degree at Gonzaga University, and shortly thereafter launched my advising career. I married my wife, Katie, in 2010 and we currently reside in Bellevue.

Something you don’t know about me is…

I once was bit by a tiger and a boa constrictor…true story!

What advice would you give your younger self?

Focus on the relationships you have and the important people around you.

Steve McMartin

Financial Advisor Partner

What do you do in 1-2 sentences?

I oversee our client relationships of the McMartin & Monson division, our advising service specifically to Alaska Airlines pilots, a group we have served for my entire career, and most of my father’s career before me.

Your career story?

I joined my father, Bill, in the McMartin Group as a partner in 1984 to direct the work serving the Alaska Airlines pilot group. Upon my father’s retirement in November of 1996, I took on the responsibility of serving his group continuing my father’s legacy of serving the financial needs of pilots for over 30 years. As I began to think about my own transition, I partnered with Grant Monson and established our McMartin & Monson partnership. Not only did I do this to help ensure continued service to my longstanding clients after I retire, but also to expand the portfolio of services being provided to them with full comprehensive planning and wealth management, which has been a real value add to many of my clients over the years.

The best part about my job is…

Relationships with people. After being in this business for almost 30 years, I have seen many of my personal and professional contacts merge, and I really enjoy having so many clients as friends.

When I’m out of the office I enjoy…”

Spending time with family and friends at Lake Roosevelt. I am an avid water skier, and enjoy paddle boarding and jet skiing as well. In recent years I joined a local softball league, which has turned out to be more fun than originally thought. The winter months consist of skiing and snowshoeing. I have always possessed a near-obsessive need for speed, which has been satisfied over the years through boat racing, high-performance cars, and four wheeling.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Work hard, live ethically. Don’t look for shortcuts. Treat people fairly, so you live without regrets.
